Getting ready to pop the question, but can’t find the right engagement ring? How about designing your own engagement ring?

During the design process, you’re likely to get to know your sweetheart a whole lot better, too.

First, you have to decide on a style: does she prefer modern or traditional?

If you don’t know the answer, take a look at the jewelry she already has. Is it simple or more elaborate?

If they can keep a secret, ask friends and family what they think will appeal to her.

Second, you’ll have to consider the type of metal to be used for the ring. In the past, most engagement rings were gold with a choice between 18K and 14K in yellow or white gold. Now, you’ll have to decide between the various forms of gold, platinum, titanium and palladium.

Platinum is often more expensive than gold, but with the recent run-up in gold prices, that may no longer be true.

Titanium is extremely durable but can’t be formed into intricate patterns and designs.

Next, you’ll have to consider the stone and its shape. The common diamond shapes are round, princess (square), emerald (rectangular), marquise (elongated with points at each eand), oval, pear (oval but pointed at one end), radiant (square or rectangular with rounded corners), heart (heart-shaped) and Asscher (a rectangular or square cut with wide, flat polished surfaces in a stepped pattern).

When considering the stone’s shape, be sure to consider the shape of her hands. Small hands look best with a round or princess cut. A marquise, pear or oval shaped stone looks best on hands with long, slender fingers.

Finally, you’ll choose the setting. Heavy, elaborate settings look awkward on small hands, yet graceful on long, slender fingers.
